We have loved having Emil and Monica in our kitchen, each and every time. They make delicious food, and they do it with an easy going panache.
I first met Emil and Monica, sitting at the bar at eve the restaurant. As we chatted, I learned they were both chefs, and that they were getting married the following week. The conversation turned to Selma Cafe, and I casually mentioned that we still needed a chef for the following week. They glanced at each other, a silent nod was shared, and Monica offered their chef services. “But you’re getting married next week,” I said, wondering if they had forgotten that little bit of information. Monica grinned in that sweet way that she does, Emil laughed out loud, and they both said something along the lines of, “and your point is??” And, so it happened, that Emil and Monica first made breakfast for Selma Cafe during a time period when most people in their pre-nuptial state would be in a slight wedding planning daze. Of course, breakfast was perfect, and they were wonderful.
Today they made food for us again, and we were thrilled we had them in our kitchen one last time before they leave for Santa Fe. They served up two amazing specials:: Savory Irish oatmeal pancakes, stuffed with hoop house spinach and goat cheese, served with a fried egg and a side of bacon. The combination of flavors and textures was scrumptious. Check it out:

The second special was roasted asparagus with miso butter served with a poached egg, potato hash and a side of bacon. The miso butter was amazing–gently smokey and rich, and a perfect match for the asparagus and potatoes. Take a look:
Both the specials were served with a side of baby hoop greens, which were beautiful and tasty.
Thanks so much Emil and Monica for being part of the Selma family. Come back and visit us soon. Thanks also to all the volunteers who pulled off this week’s breakfast– Susie Baity-Stearns, Michelle Fortin, Noah Miller, Brittany Brown, Olivia Gramprie, Erin Schumacher, Shoshana Hurand, Amanda Schott, Jyoti Athanikar, Mary Rock, Anne West, Samu Rast, Cassie Peabody, Alison Riefh, Anna Bakeman, Gary Mazzeo, Remi Holden and Jennifer Jensen. You are all awesome, and we couldn’t do this without you.
We also want to share some exciting news. Tomm and Trilby Becker, of Sunseed Farm are now here every Friday morning for CSA pick up. They had the most beautiful produce today. Be sure to come by and introduce yourselves.

That’s it for today. Tomorrow we are in Detroit, all day, building the season’s first micro-loan based hoop house for Spirit Farm. Come on by and help– we’d love to see you there. I’ll post some pictures after. In the meantime, enjoy the lusciousness of spring, and have a peaceful and happy Mother’s Day.
