FridayMornings@SELMA invites you to pull up a chair and share your vision for the future of food.

Dan Vernia is back this time leading the “Gang of Five” ready to dish up some spice and history.  These culinary nomads from afar (well, ok, around Rochester, MI), made up of members from restaurant venues too numerous to count on their remaining fingers, come armed with recipes from The Creole Cookery Book, published by the Christian Women's Exchange of New Orleans in 1885.  This amazing find and many others are part of the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive at the William L. Clements Library on the U of M Campus. One of the leading historical culinary collections in the country, donated to the Library by Jan and her husband Daniel Long one.  The Library's exhibition space is open to the public featuring special exhibitions from the permanent collection of primary source materials relating to the history of American cuisine.  So here it is:

·        An old fashion gumbo with pulled chicken and Jeff's Spanish chorizo, served over oven roasted tomato and topped with poached egg to help us remember our friends along the Gulf.

·        And for the vegetarians, we sauté up some spicy greens with mushrooms and chioga beets, topped with a tofu and roasted red pepper terrine and baked eggplant.

Both specials get a slice of Virginia corn cake from our featured cookbook.

Don't forget our fruit seasonal regular breakfast choices: Waffles with peaches or blueberries and…… Lisa being out of town (Kripalu Yoga workshop) isn’t even stopping her from making another killa’ peach bread pudding for y’all.

The news:

Common Cycle will be set up in the driveway this week.  These are the folks about town lately doing free bicycle repairs.  You may have seen them in action at the Sunday Artisans Market.  Ride on over and you might just get a complimentary adjustment or other dose of bike love.  Please check out and support their Kickstarter project to buy more tools and supplies.   Y ou can get a shirt out of the deal!  We need these people to be appreciated and supported in our town.

Holler Fest 2010 is next weekend.  Mark your calendars for August 20-22 – for a three-day festival on Frog Holler Farm, supporting local musicians, sharing local food, and building local community!  Over thirty performers, organic meals from the farm, camping, lots of kid's activities, guided nature walks, yoga/t'ai chi.  Our own little Woodstock – local-foods style.  Lisa and I will be there, camping all weekend, and serving up breakfast Saturday.  Lisa will be teaching yoga as well.  Not to be missed.

Salsa Canning Work Day: Sunday, August 22nd  Preserving Traditions will host a salsa canning work day from 1-5pm on August 22nd. We'll work together to turn tomatoes, onions, garlic, and peppers into five or six gallons of salsa (some hot, some mild). We'll contribute the ingredients collectively - ideally, from our own gardens - and split the finished salsa among us to stock our pantries for winter!

There are a few requirements you can check out at the above link.

A bit early for all of the details on this one, but I hope you will consider penciling in Sunday September 26th form 5 – 8pm.  We will be launching the Farmer Fund (a way for folks in the community to be able to co-lend on all of our building projects) at a fundraiser event and Grange Kitchen and Bar.
